Ea este personajul central al seriei, cu părul lung şi ochii roşii. Entitate sprirituală cu trecut tragic, ce trăieşte într-o lume crepusculară alături de bunica ei, este cea care duce la bun sfârşit răzbunarea în folosul clienţilor ei. Ea de obicei poartă un seifuku negru sau o uniformă marinărescă (care de obicei este purtată în lunile de iarnă, dar poartă mereu un kimono cu model floral când aduce răzbunare clienţilor. Ai şi-a început cariera ca Fata Iadului o dată cu primul ei act de răzbunare asupra sătenilor care au condamnat-o la o moarte ca sacrificiu. Ochii ei au devenit roşii din momentul în care Sentarou (prietenul ei din copilărie care a cedat asupra presiunii săteniilor de a o îngropa de vie) a aruncat prima lopată cu pământ peste faţa ei. După o vreme, ea s-a ridicat din mormânt şi s-a răzbunat pe întregul sat prin furia ei, arzând-l. Datoria ei de a îndeplinii răzbunarea altor oameni şi trimiterea oamenilor în Iad este pedeapsa ei, o datorie pe care ea a îndeplinit-o de 400 de ani. Wanzudo a remarcat că ea încă are sentimente, chiar dacă ea nu le-a exteriorizat, şi s-a descoperit mai târziu că Păianjenului i-a ordonat lui Ai să-şi închidă inima. Experienţele avute alături de familia Shibata, îi readuc aminte de soarta ei teribilă şi aparent îi trezesc şi alte sentimente, sau măcar abilitatea de a le exprima. În cel de-al doilea sezon, Ai devine mai expresivă îi prezintă mai multe sentimente, astfel devenind mai dornică să interacţioneze cu ceilalţi şi cu "clienţii" ei. De asemenea, în una din scene , ea arată un " V al victoriei" în faţa ţintei ca o metodă de batjocură şi tortură înainte de a o trimite în iad; în alta, ea este văzută citind o revistă de modă. Sentimentele şi amintirile ei sunt încă odată trezite de suferinţa lui Takuma Kurebayashi.
